Coop W'05

Hey!
So, this is my winter coop term!
I'm working at GE Lighting in Oakville. It's kinda neat in that this is the first real engineering job I've had, and it's number 5.
They have me doing some neat stuff. For the most part it's just monkey work... updating files and stocks, and finding drawings people misplaced, but I get some cool stuff too. I get to repair a label dispenser. How do I do that with no mechancal experience you ask? It involves calling the manufacturer and asking them to do it. I was assigned the job by someone who emails people that he "heard" their company is going bankrupt, cause they never answer him otherwise. Sneaky. I think he figured a girl might have better luck.
I also get to design a couple things like diverters and chutes. Design, you ask? Design involves looking for parts in magazines and putting them all together in AutoCAD.
So, what exactly is it that GE Lighting does, you might ask. Well, they make lightbulbs. At the plant I'm at, they virtually make it all themselves. They don't blow the glass, but they make the base, coat it white, assemble the inside filaments, and connect it all together. And they test and pack it, too. There's so much broken glass everywhere! I get to see all sorts of defective light bulbs. Fun! Lots of big machines and big flames. I can get really really close. The floor guys really like when I bug them, and they explain tons of stuff to me.
Every week, I have a "quality and production" meeting I gotta go to. They give us food, cause they tend to be really really long. This week, I fell asleep at the 40 minute mark of the 4 hour meeting. (I think this one was unusally long.) Someone was saying maintenance happened over the night shift, but someone else thought it happened during the four hours of shutdown during the afternoon shift. The boss is trying really hard not to alienate anyone, so rather than say "find out for sure what happened then" he expained maybe 10 times that he thought it was the night shift that did the maintenance, and had it explained back just as much that there was a shutdown during the afternoon shift.
I'm really not sure why I have to go to these meetings. I suspect it's just in case someone says "and I have this monkey work job to get done and I don't have time" so someone can turn to me and say "so you can take care of that, right?" and expect me to know exactly what's going on cause I'm paying attention and all.
Last week's meeting was kinda neat. Someone pointed out we should go tour the Coca Cola plant in Brampton to see what their automation is like. I think they're trying to get more of the plant automated.
Also, someone yelled at his boss to "shut up". I couldn't stop laughing.
So, work is fun.
Anyone got any questions about it?
Comments:
I wondered why your company store sold lights. Now I understand that it's cause that's what GE does-besides dishwashers and all that other General Electric stuff ;-)

Glad you like your new job. When will you be done school, again?
