What is the HEN?
Since I'm sure I told everyone about my volunteer appointment as HEN secretary... here's what we do.
A lot of information about the Halton Environmental Network (HEN) is available on the website.

The HEN is a non-advocating, not-for-profit corporation which has several initiatives.

The HEN is a non-advocating, not-for-profit corporation which has several initiatives.
- The HEN allows networking between environmental non-profit groups/individuals
- The HEN publishes the yearly Enviro Guide, which promotes local green businesses, specifically our member groups. (for 2009 Enviro Guide, click here.)
- The HEN has volunteers attend events and festivals all over Halton
- The HEN administers the Halton Region Solar Project (HRSP). This project helps homeowners install both PV solar panels and hot water solar panels by:
- reaching out with email bulletins
- provide solar information including descriptions of solar types, costs, paybacks, requirements, government incentives...
- contacting homeowners to offer free home consultations for viability of solar installations
- network with solar vendors to get discounted prices for homeowners
- help homeowners installing solar to get through bureaucracy to get on the grid
- organize solar tours to display home installations
- organize a yearly solar fair (October 2009)
- The HEN administers grant funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation for various projects. At the moment, these include:
- Green Engagement Culture (GEC) – This will be a program offered to local businesses who want to be recognized as “green” for their entire business culture.
- Halton Centre for Social Innovation (HCSI) – This project will determine need for a shared office space for social groups in Halton which can allow cheap office space, networking, and sharing ideas - similar to this one in Toronto:
http://socialinnovation.ca/ - Dad's Against Dirty Air – This is an anti-idling program focused primarily at school yards, but has grown beyond Halton.
