WRITE YOUR MP!
PLEASE write to your MP, and get your friends/family to write to theirs about the climate bill C-311!!
The bill is called the Climate Change Accountability Act. In summary, it proposes Canada reduces it's carbon emissions by 25% of 1990 levels by 2020, and by 80% by 2050. Those are the minimum levels proposed by the UN. If every country sticks to them, it's supposed to keep the temperature rise below 2C. The bill has been read in parliament twice already... I'm not sure how it works exactly, but it's close to being passed into law.
The key here is that it should be passed into law by December, in time for the Copenhagen Summit. This is supposed to be the big treaty that will replace the Kyoto agreement, so it's extremely important. Having legislation will encourage other countries to follow suit. It looks like if we don't get our act together, we'll be an international embarrassment. Harper has already made us into the 10th largest polluter in the world, because of the growth of the tar sands. We have very poor targets in place at the moment - cuts of 20% of 2006 levels by 2020. We've been given multiple "Fossil of the Day" awards for trying to hamper UN environmental negotiations. It's almost like Harper is replacing Bush.
On the 21st of October, there was a vote to delay passing the climate bill. All the conservatives voted to delay it, all the NDP and Bloc voted to fast-track it. Liberals were split, all but 14 voted to delay it. Since the vote, there was a couple protests in Ottawa. One had over 3000 people show up. Another time, parliament was interrupted, it got a little violent, and people were arrested. In other words, this is something people do care about in this country.
I think the reason the conservatives want to delay it is because they think it will be an economic disaster, especially for the oil industry in Alberta. However, there are studies that show Canada would flourish if we invested in green energy instead of oil. There are other studies that show there will be far worse economic impact if we don't take bigger steps to control carbon emissions now.
Anyways, I'd really appreciate if you wrote your MP to say you're really disappointed that the Climate Change Accountability Act, bill C-311, was delayed. You hope that he/she will be voting to pass it in the future, especially in lieu of the upcoming summit in Copenhagen. Find out which way your MP voted here.
Thanks,
Mel
